How to create an environmentally friendly garden

Sustainability and the environment are key considerations for many people when it comes to creating a garden. However, knowing where to start and which products to choose can be quite overwhelming.

Many of us would like a garden that is picturesque and practical, but we’re also looking at ways in which we can make our gardens more environmentally- and nature-friendly.

Here’s a few tips to do just that…

Go wild!

There are many small changes you can make in your garden that will have an environmental impact. For example, introducing bee-friendly plants will encourage more pollinating insects. Or you could introduce an insect ‘hotel’, or let part of your garden to go ‘wild’ by planting wild meadow flowers. All these options will attract a wider variety of wildlife and insects.

Hedges are fantastic for wildlife, allowing them to wander from garden to garden without restriction. However, they can be high maintenance and don’t grow well everywhere, so a viable alternative could be a sustainably sourced fence.

Sustainable timber alternative

Timber is the first material many people will think of when it comes to creating a fence and or decked area. However, when looking for the most sustainable and environmentally-friendly option, wood composite is worth considering.

Wood composite decking and fences are often manufactured from recycled or sustainably-sourced materials. They offer the beauty of timber but require no treatments or paints, which can be harmful to the environment, and require very little maintenance. Wood composite will also outlast timber by many years and when it’s time to replace it – it’s also recyclable!

Getting creative with composite

With a little bit of imagination and ingenuity, wood composite can be used to create fencing, tables, benches, and plant pots – besides flooring of course. As well as being virtually maintenance free, these boards are splinter, rot and slip resistant making them durable and safe for use in gardens.

Small changes, big impact

Making your garden more environmentally-friendly doesn’t have to mean a major overhaul. By making small changes, such as introducing insect-friendly flowers, or keeping hedges and bushes, will all improve our planet. When making choices about the materials you bring into your garden, always aim for ones that are sustainably sourced, long lasting, and recyclable. With these tips we hope you can create a beautiful, but environmentally sound space that will last for many years to come.
