Can you have a fire pit on composite decking?

Fire pits are a stylish addition to any outdoor space, providing a beautiful focal point and source of warmth to enjoy outdoor living at any time of year. But can you use a fire pit on your composite decking? This blog looks at whether a fire pit is compatible with composite decking and the measures you should take to create a beautiful space that’s also safe.

Can a fire pit be used on composite decking?

Yes! It is possible to use a fire pit on a composite decking – as long as you follow the right precautions and safety measures.

Choosing the right type of fire pit for your garden

There are several different styles of fire pit available including wood burning, propane, gas and electric.

Wood burning fit pit

Whilst it’s possible to use a wood burning fire pit on composite decking, it’s not the most appropriate option and, if you do, you need to ensure you take the proper precautions to protect your decking. For example, the pit should be always placed on a protective matt or ceramic (see below).

This type of fire pit can get extremely hot, and sparks and embers can fly out of the pit onto your decking, potentially damaging the surface. As such, a wood burning fire pit should never be left unattended. Depending on the colour of your Decking, fire damage from sparks and embers can be very noticeable and spoil the look or style you were hoping for. A traditional Brown composite decking may look old when damaged and black or grey composite decking may lose its modern appeal.

Propane and gas fire pits

Propane and gas fire pits create less heat than wood burning fire pits, so they’re less likely to damage your composite decking. They also don’t create embers, which reduces the risk of damage to your wide PVC decking. An added benefit is that they’re also very easy to install.

However, the legs of these style of pits can become extremely hot, so it’s still important to ensure there’s the correct protection in place to prevent heat damage.

Electric fire pits

Electric fire pits are newer to the market and, as such, are often more expensive. They are however easy to maintain and very easy to use. A big advantage is they are easier to control in terms of temperature.

Composite decking protection

It’s important to protect your composite decking boards from your new fire pit. Never place your fire pit directly onto your decking, as the intense heat could easily scorch or burn the deck causing aesthetic and potentially structural damage. It’s also important to consider the damage from sparks and embers of a wood burner!

There are a few different ways you can prevent your fire pit from damaging your decking:

Use a fire matt

These are specifically designed matts which create a barrier between your fire pit and your decking. Research fire pits that come with a fire matt built in as standard.

Mount on a fire protection stand

These stands help to raise portable fire pits off the surface of your decking and can withstand high levels of heat.

Build a separate area

Locate your fire pit on a different surface, such as in a paved or gravelled area. An alternative is to purchase a fit pit that’s embedded in furniture, such as a table, or sunken into the ground, or built up in a brick surround. By getting creative you can turn the pit into a real focal point of your space.

Fire pit safety tips

  • Ensure there is a specially made protective matt or other material, such as bricks, between the fire pit and the decking. These will help to absorb the heat from the fire pit and prevent the surface of the decking from overheating, which can cause irreversible damage.
  • Clear the area around your fire pit of any flammable materials and debris. This will help minimise the potential of sparks causing potential fires.
  • It is advisable to keep your fire pit at least 20 feet away from your home. This is to help protect your house from any potential fire damage.
  • If you have a wood burning fire pit, remember to clean out the pit and dispose of the ashes once they have cooled. Leaving ashes in the pit can cause corrosion over time, especially if they get wet.
  • Know where your nearest water supply is (for wood burning fires)! A garden hose is perfect, but if you don’t have one, a bucket of water nearby is recommended.
  • Never leave your fire pit unattended! Even if you follow all the above safety precautions, it’s important to always be aware of your fire pit and its surrounding environment.

Fire pits are a great addition to your outdoor space and allow you to enjoy it all year round – regardless of the weather! All our composite decking collections will provide the perfect backdrop for your new fire pit.

But always remember that there are risks with a fire pit and you should follow safety precautions at all times.
