The benefits of composite garden decking

Rot not

Unlike timber decking, Ecodek’s composite garden decking will not rot, warp or split. This means it’ll stand the test of time, look great, and stay safe for years to come.

It’s also splinter-resistant and has a low slip potential, so you can enjoy your new space with confidence. Learn more in our blog: The lifespan of decking materials.

Less upkeep, more downtime

With composite decking, there’s no need to paint, treat or stain the boards. A simple sweep and mop is all that’s needed to keep your deck looking tip-top, so you’ve got more time to sit back and relax in your garden.

DIY home decking FAQs

How do I start a DIY garden decking project?

Thinking of revamping your garden with a decked area? Excellent! Whether you’ve got a Pinterest board stacked with design inspiration or you’re starting from scratch, Ecodek can help.

Give us a call to talk through the considerations you need to make before laying your first board, from choosing a deck style and prepping your garden to installation guidance, and care and maintenance. You can also find lots of handy information in our guide to DIY decking.

What materials are best for DIY decking boards?

You’ll find several materials on the market for DIY decking projects, like timber, plastic, and composite. As composite suppliers, we might be biased – but the low-maintenance, long-lasting properties of the material speaks for itself and make the boards a popular choice for homeowners like you.

When starting your project, make sure you consider all the decking elements you’ll need alongside the board material, such as fixtures, fittings, and subframes. Like composite decking, composite accessories are designed for simple installation and to last for years to come.

Head to our blog to find comparisons between the different decking materials, plus reasons to consider a composite subframe over timber.

What tools do I need for building my own decking?

Different decking requires different tools, so you should always read the installation guide to understand what you’ll need to complete the job.

If you order boards from Ecodek, you don’t need any ‘specialist’ tools. But we do recommend the following to make installation as straightforward and efficient as possible:

  • Circular saw
  • Cordless drill
  • Spirit level
  • Smart-Bit®
  • Chalk line
  • Ecodek spacer
  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection
  • Dust mask

How do I maintain and care for home decking?

If your home deck is made from composite materials, it’ll be simpler and easier to look after than traditional timber boards, which are prone to rotting and warping. Our experts recommend giving your composite deck a thorough clean at least twice a year, by:

  1. Sweeping the area to remove debris, like leaves.
  2. Pulling out any debris that has fallen into gaps between the boards.
  3. Mopping the deck with your chosen cleaning solution (we suggest a WPC (wood-plastic composite) cleaner), gently working the product into the surface.
  4. Rinsing the area.
  5. Allowing the deck to dry fully before placing furniture and other accessories back onto it.

Our blog, ‘how to clean composite decking’, has further details on keeping your deck spick-and-span all year-round.

Can I install decking myself or should I hire a professional?

If you’re a savvy DIYer, then you’ll probably be able to install a basic composite deck at home. This said, it all depends on the extent of your skills and confidence. More complex projects are best left to the professionals, whose years of experience will allow for a fast and efficient install.

At Ecodek, we can advise you on whether you can take on the fitting yourself or hire an installer. With a network of approved installers around the UK, we can also help you find the right professional to trust with your project.

What is the cost comparison between DIY decking and hiring a garden decking company?

If you already have the tools, then a DIY installation is generally free. If you don’t have the tools, you’ll need to set aside some extra budget (they can cost up to £1,000) or look to hire a specialist installer. They will already have the right tools for the job, and because of their experience, they’re likely to be much faster at completing the fit.

Bear in mind that the cost of decking installation will depend on a number of factors, from the size and complexity of the deck to the location of your home. For an accurate quote tailored to your decked area, please fill out the form on our ‘find an installer’ page – our team will then point you in the direction of trusted installers.

How long does it typically take to complete a DIY decking project?

The amount of time it takes to finish a DIY deck depends on a number of factors, including:

  • The size of the deck
  • The complexity of the area
  • Available time
  • Your experience and skillset
  • The Great British weather

One of the draws of composite decking is that it can be installed year-round, meaning you can start your project in the winter, ready for the first spring sunshine. For a more accurate estimation of how long it’ll take to complete your DIY deck, please speak to our team.

What are the most common mistakes to avoid when fitting decking yourself?

The key to a successful DIY install is patience. Make sure you’ve got plenty of time to prepare the area, arrange your tools, and lay out your boards to plan any decking patterns before starting your install.

  • Ensure you’ve got the correct tools before you begin – you’ll cause more problems by ‘making do’ with a tool that’s not right for the job than investing in, or borrowing, the one you actually need.
  • Double-check you’ve ordered enough materials and components to complete the project.
  • Don’t rush it – for the best results, take your time.
