Composite decking screws and drill

What screws do I need to fit composite decking?

The fixings you use for your composite decking are equally as important as the boards you choose. Using the wrong ones can damage the integrity of the boards and even void your warranty.

If your composite decking boards require face fixing with screws, you need to be sure you’re using the right ones.

In this blog we look at the types of screws you need for your composite decking, how you work out the quantity and the implications of getting it wrong.

What screws are used for composite decking?

It’s important to always use screws that are compatible with the material of your decking, in this case: wood composite. Before using any screw, read the manufacturer’s installation instructions carefully, as these will most likely include information on the correct ones to use.

For Ecodek face-fixed decking collections we recommend 53mm or 65mm screws, depending on the chosen board and whether screwing into a timber or composite base.

Ecodek composite decking screws are also made from stainless steel for optimum strength and have colour-matched heads, so they blend seamlessly with your chosen decking collection. Some companies will offer matching screw plugs to hide the countersunk screws.

How many screws do I need?

There’s no definitive answer to this, and again, we recommend reading the manufacturer’s installation instructions as a guide. However, the following factors may affect the number you use:

1. Dimensions of the deck

You need to consider the height, width, and depth of your deck when it comes to working out how many screws you’ll need. Obviously the larger your decked area, the more screws you’ll need.

2. Screws per deck board

Counting how many screws you need per board will help to give you an overall number for your decking. Most boards will require two screws per end to secure them into place, but review the manufacturer’s instructions to double check requirements.

3. Joist spacing

It’s also important to consider the spacing of your joists. The more space there is between them, the fewer joists and screws you will need. Likewise, the less space there is between the joists, the more screws you’ll require. Spacing is dependent on your choice of deck board and subframe material (see manufacturer’s installation guide).

4. Don’t forget!

You’ll also need screws for your decking subframe and any fascia boards! If using timber, different screws will be required.

5. Hidden fasteners

Many composite decking boards will be fitted using a hidden clip system. These clips are screwed into the joists, rather than the boards being screwed directly to the joists.

If you’re using the fastener technique, then you’ll require fewer composite decking screws, however, if fitting Evolution, some specialist screws are still required for the first and final boards.

Don’t forget to use our composite decking calculator to calculate your screw or clip requirements, or contact our team for an accurate quote and item list, based on your specific project.

What happens if I use the wrong screws to fit composite decking?

Using the wrong screws can have a negative impact on the integrity of a composite deck board, so it’s important to read the manufacturer’s instructions very carefully before you start to use screws to fix down your deck.

With the wrong screws the following issues can arise:

Cracked boards

If you use the wrong size screw – particularly one which is too large – you run the risk of cracking your boards. It’s also very important to pre-drill your screw holes, as forcing a screw directly in your decking board can also lead to cracking.

Structural problems

If the screws used in your deck are of poor quality or the wrong size this could negatively impact the strength and durability of your deck.

Voided warranty

Some manufacturers may void their warranties if damage caused to a board is your fault – and not theirs! This includes damage caused by using the wrong fixings.
