Composite decking screws

How to screw down composite decking

One of the many benefits of composite decking is its ease of installation. In this post we focus on fixing your decking with screws and discuss whether it’s safe to do so, what’s the alternative and how to face fix your decking.

Using screws to fix composite decking

Using screws to install your composite decking is perfectly safe and is one of two preferred fixing methods: using a clip system or face-fixing with screws.

Many suppliers will argue that one method is better than the other, but our advice is to use the method recommended in your decking supplier or installation instructions. This will have a major impact on the finial finish of your project and could void your warranty if the wrong method is used.

At Ecodek our capped decking collection, Evolution, uses a hidden clip fixing system, whilst our uncapped collections, Heritage, Signature AT, Signature HD, Essentials and Stadia, are face fixed.

Which screws do I need?

Most composite decking brands prefer you to use specific screws (it’s in the T&Cs of their warranty) to ensure the correct fitting of the boards and so as not to risk the integrity and durability of the structure.

There are various screw types available, so it’s important to read your decking instructions. For example, some of our collections require 63mm screws, whilst others need 53mm screws.

You may also need another size for your substructure.

Choosing the right type of composite decking screws will ensure your decking is safe and secure.

For quantities, don’t forget to use our composite decking calculator to calculate your requirements, or contact our team for an accurate quote and item list, based on your specific project.

How to screw down composite decking

As well as using the right screws, it’s also important to know how to fit your screws into your new decking.

Nothing beats following the manufacturer’s instructions, however here’s some top tips:

1. Use the right tools

The best drill to make the required holes is an 18v or above cordless drill or impact driver.

2. Pre-drill your holes

At Ecodek we advise installers to pre-drill screw holes and we provide a custom drill-bit with a Torx head for this called a Smartbit®. Pre-drilling lets you countersink the board, greatly reducing installation time as well as providing a professional, seamless finish.

If holes are not pre-drilled this can lead to permanent damage to the boards.

3. Place screws in the right places

Your manufacturer’s installation guide will often provide instructions on where to place your screws e.g distance from the edge of the board, opposite each other etc. It’s important to follow them to ensure your stricture is safe and long-lasting.

Placing screws in the wrong places can cause the boards to split.

Factors to consider when screwing down composite decking

Always read the manufacturer’s instructions

It’s imperative to always read the manufacturer’s instructions before you start to install your new decking. This guidance will include information on which screws you should use and where they should be placed. If you do not follow these instructions, you could risk voiding your warranty.

Hollow boards

It is not advisable to drill or screw directly through hollow composite deck boards as you run the risk of creating splits and cracks.

Always pre-drill

It’s important to pre-drill your screw holes on solid composite decking to help prevent cracking or splitting your composite boards.
