Balustrades and railings FAQs
Which balustrade is best for composite decking?
The best balustrade for your composite decked area depends on several factors. These include:
- Aesthetic
- Longevity
- Cost
A composite balustrade is ideal for combining durability with a wood-effect finish. For a more contemporary look, opt for balustrades and railings made from stainless steel – smooth, silver, and super sleek. If low-maintenance and cost are important, look no further than PVC balustrades.

What’s the difference between balustrades and railings for decking?
‘Balustrade’ refers to a system made up of small posts or pillars (‘balusters’), which are usually connected by a handrail. Metal, glass, wood, and stone are some of the most popular materials that balustrades are made from. They tend to be more decorative in design and purpose than railings, which typically have a simpler, more functional design.
A ‘railing’ is a single structure made from materials such as wood or metal. It runs along the edge of a raised surface, like an outdoor deck.

Does decking need railings?
Whether your decking needs railings or not is down to the height of the deck, as well as your personal safety preferences.
Under BS6180, guards (railings) are required for residential decking. If the deck is up to 600mm high, the minimum height the balustrades need to be in 900mm. For decks over 600mm, the balustrade minimum height increases to 1100mm. It’s always best to check any additional requirements with your Local Planning Authority if you’d like to add railings to low-level decks.
Commercial settings with decked areas must have railings that are 1100mm higher than the deck. We recommend you speak to a building inspector who will be able to explain all the regulations and requirements your commercial decking needs to meet.
