Calculate your decking material in 4 easy steps.

Trying to work out just how much decking material you require for your home decking installation is a very straightforward process, especially if the deck is to be a rectangular shape.

You just need to know:

• The size of the area you are going to deck
• The length of boards you want to use (with our Signature and Heritage ranges, you can opt of bespoke lengths anywhere between 1.5m and 5m, although we can actually manufacture boards up to 9m* long if required!)

Once you know the above you can start to work out how many boards you will need to cover this area. For the purposes of this guide, we are working with an area that is 6m x 4m = 24m2

STEP 01

Work out how many square metres the area is: Length x Width

Example: 6m x 4m = 24m2

STEP 02

To cover 1m² with Ecodek Signature, Heritage or Peaks and Parks decking profiles you need 7.2 linear metres of material. Therefore, the next calculation is to work out how many linear metres is needed to cover this area: m² x 7.2

Example: 24m2 = 172.8lm

STEP 03

Once the overall total of metres is calculated, to work out the number of boards required divide the total by the length of board. Please note: Peaks and Parks are available in stock lengths of 3.6m and 4.8m only. For example: Total Linear Metreage ÷ Length.

Example: 172.8lm ÷ 3.6 = 48

STEP 04

If you do not get an exact figure for the number or boards, just round up. This will give you the number of boards at the required length to cover your decking area, including the space required for gaps between boards:

Example: 48 boards at 3.6m lengths will cover an area of 24m²

Fixings

It is essential with all Ecodek profiles (Signature, Heritage or Peaks and Parks) that our specified fixings are used – not using these will not only invalidate the warranty but may also encourage the failure of your decking structure and installation.

Signature & Heritage profiles
  1. We recommend 40 screws for every m². Therefore to work out how many screws you will need, calculate m² x 40. E.g. 24 x 40 = 960
  2. We sell the Signature and Heritage screws in multiples of 200s therefore 1000 screws will be recommended for this area, or 5 boxes.

So for this area of 24m2 in Signature or Heritage you would need:

  • Minimum of 48 boards at 4 metre lengths
  • 1000 Stainless Screws
Peaks and Parks profiles
  1. To start the deck, you need to use Start/End Clips every 305mm. For the first run of 4m you will need: 14 Start/End Clips

  2. With Parks & Peaks it is essential that the supplied fixings are used. We recommend 22 line clips for every metre square. Therefore, to work out how many line clips you will need to: m² x 22 24 x 22 = 528 Line Clips

  3. An Ecodek Fixing set has 80 line clips plus 10 butt joint clips. For the 528 line clips required: 528 ÷ 80 = 6.6 rounded up to 7 bags

  4. To finish the deck, you will need use Start/End Clips every 305mm. For the last run 4m board you will need: 14 Start/End Clips

So for this area of 24m2 in Peaks or Parks you would need:

  • Minimum of 48 boards at 3.6 metre lengths

  • 28 Stop Start/Clips: 2 Boxes (can also use Face Fix screws which is 1 Box of 100 screws)

  • 528 Line Clips: 7 Bags

Remember to order slightly more boards than you will need, this way, if you find yourself one short for some reason, then you won’t have to go to the hassle or expense of ordering more.

Substructure

Don’t forget you can complement the outstanding quality of your Ecodek decking project by using our composite joists. Again – these simple formulas will help work out your quantities:

Substructure: Signature & Heritage profiles
  1. 1m2 area of decking requires 3.5 linear metres of substructure. Therefore, the next calculation is to work out how many linear metres is needed to cover this area: m² x 3.5 24m2 = 84lm

  2. Divide the linear meterage of substructure by the length (for example 3.6m Low Profile Bearers). Based on the calculations in the blog above, the deck area on 24m2 would require 24 lengths of bearer at 3.6m.

Substructure: Peaks and Parks profiles
  1. 1m2 area of decking requires 4.5 linear metres of substructure. Therefore, the next calculation is to work out how many linear metres is needed to cover this area: m² x 3.5 24m2 = 84lm

  2. Divide the linear meterage of substructure by the length (for example 3.6m Low Profile Bearers). Based on the calculations in the blog above, the deck area on 24m2 would require 24 lengths of bearer at 3.6m.
