Fire rated decking FAQs
Can Adek fire rated deck boards be used on balconies above 11m?
Yes – all Adek aluminium deck boards and components are non-combustible and carry fire-ratings of A2fl-s1 and A2-s1, d0. This means they meet building regulations BS 8579:2020 and are suitable for high rise balconies, walkways and terraces.
Why is aluminium suitable for high rise decking?
Aluminium is classed as a non-combustible material and will not contribute to the perpetuation of a fire. It’s also highly resistant to forms of corrosion. The metal’s natural coating of aluminium oxide provides a highly effective barrier to the ravages of air, temperature, moisture and chemical attack.
Can Adek aluminium boards be retrofit?
Yes – Adek aluminium decking systems have been developed with the retrofit market in mind. Our Adek boards come in either 20mm or 30mm heights which will cover most project requirements that are replacing wood or composite.
Can Adek be used in domestic gardens?
Yes, in fact it’s an excellent choice for garden landscaping. It’s long lasting, has low-slip potential and requires minimal maintenance. It’s also sleek and modern in appearance.
Can a single Adek fire-rated decking board be replaced?
Yes – because our aluminium deck boards are screw-fixed through the face, rather than interlocking or through a clip system, it allows a single board to be lifted and replaced if necessary.
Can Adek aluminium boards be used vertically e.g to clad a wall?
In theory they can, but there are various installation parameters and building regulations that need to be met, therefore please contact us directly to discuss your requirements before specifying this application.
Is Adek suitable for off-site balcony construction?
Yes. The fixing channels on Adek boards are wide enough to allow eye bolts with a collar diameter of up to 40mm to be fixed through the board into the frame. Once the balcony has been secured, the eyebolts can be removed and the channel cover snapped into place.
Can Adek aluminium boards be cut to a mitred or picture frame finish?
Yes – you will need a sliding saw with the correct cut capacity. The blade will need to make a cut of 420mm at a depth of either 20mm or 30mm depending on depth of the Adek board used.
Does aluminium decking get hot in direct sunlight?
Like most decking materials in direct sunlight, aluminium decking will absorb and retain some heat. However, it retains less heat than either timber or composite decking because of the inherent properties of aluminium which enable it to disperse heat much quicker.
