High-rise projects are complex and often subject to intense scrutiny, from planning authorities and investors to residents and the wider public. For architects and specifiers, these buildings present a rare opportunity: the chance to define how people experience a structure from the outside in. In a competitive market, distinctiveness matters. Whether it’s a block of apartments or a mixed-use development, clients expect buildings that feel unique rather than formulaic.
We know that architects want to introduce design flair, while specifiers need to balance aesthetics with performance, compliance, and longevity. Achieving individuality without compromising on safety, durability, or regulatory compliance is a challenge – and where aluminium decking becomes a powerful design tool.
Aluminium decking: The perfect design canvas
Modern high-rise buildings have a mix of walkways, terraces, and balconies. They’re functional spaces, but they can also be turned into architectural features with aluminium decking. It offers:
- High visual impact: The dark grey colours of aluminium deck boards can contrast with, or complement, cladding systems.
- Flexible design options: Boards can be used to create visual zoning between floors or uses, or cut to bespoke sizes to fit specific areas.
- Clear performance standards for compliance: Aluminium decking is a naturally non-combustible material. It meets the requirement for the use of non-combustible materials in buildings above 11m high as set out in the Building Safety Act 2022.
How aluminium decking enables architectural flair
With aluminium decking, the scope for design flair is broader than you may first realise. For architects looking to add their stamp to a building, the boards provide plenty of opportunities to be creative, from colour and texture to patterns.
1. Colour

Modern powder coating systems allow aluminium decking to be specified in a range of RAL (the colour management system used in Europe). The coating provides the aluminium boards with a durable finish that maintains its colour at height. It’s particularly suited for high-rise applications that are exposed to the elements, like wind, rain, and UV. As standard, our aluminium decking system ‘Adek’ comes in Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016), but is also available in other RAL.

2. Texture
Texture adds depth to decking, helping to lift ‘flat’ colours on taller facades that can appear 2D from a distance. With smooth and ribbed finishes, Adek boards give high-rises extra visual appeal.
Adek Comfort Grip features a stylish and smooth finish. It also offers high levels of grip (tested to BS7976-2) to make it ‘foot-friendly’.

Adek Enhanced Grip has a low profile raised ridge (1mm) running the full length of the boards, which creates a more ‘commercial’ aesthetic. The chamfered shoulders of the ridges mean the boards are still comfortable underfoot, whilst providing exceptionally high levels of grip.

Both boards are appealing to the eye and improve underfoot performance, helping to meet slip resistance requirements for external walkways and balconies.
Maximising creativity while maintaining compliance
In high-rise design, all of this creativity must happen within strict boundaries. Aluminium decking combines aesthetics and compliance, making it a go-to choice for architects and specifiers.
Properties of Adek boards
- Naturally non-combustible
- High strength-to-weight ratio
- Long service life with minimal maintenance
- Resistant to rot, corrosion, and UV degradation
