Composite decking is an extremely low maintenance alternative to timber, and only requires cleaning with simple tools. However, to keep your composite deck in tip top condition, we recommend that you follow the five simple steps below.
1. Keep clear of debris
If you leave dead leaves or twigs on your low maintenance decking boards for too long, then it can lead to mould growth, as the leaves can trap moisture onto your decking surface. To stop leaves from accumulating, simply remove them by sweeping them with a broom. Sweeping your composite decking also ensures the removal of dirt and debris. Remember to check the gaps between the decking boards and clear any dirt and debris from between them. You will need to do this to allow for easy passage of water so that puddles don’t form on your deck surface after rain.
2. Don’t drag objects on a composite deck
We know that this may sound quite obvious, but it is really important not to drag objects such as furniture or flower pots, along composite decking boards. This will not only weaken the decking joist that you have used, but it will also scratch the surface of the decking. If you need to move any object around your deck, simply lift the object and carry it. For items such as furniture it’s a good idea to place protective pads on the feet to minimise gouges.
3. Avoid placing hot objects on your composite deck
If you want your composite decking area to look it’s best then do not place hot objects onto it. It is important to remember that composite decking is made from both wood and plastic and therefore placing a hot object onto your deck can distort the look of it. If you are using your decking area as an outdoor kitchen, you should ensure that you do not place appliances, such as a barbecue grill, directly onto your deck.
4. Remove oil and grease from food and drink immediately
If you are using your decking area as an outdoor kitchen, then you need to remove any -food residue from the decking as soon as possible. This can also be said for if you are using your deck as a dining area too. It is very easy for food and drinks to be dropped whilst entertaining or hosting your friends and family, so always check for spillages and dropped food that might create grease stains. If you do notice any oil or grease stains on your deck, remove as soon as you can. There are specialised cleaners recommended for composite decking readily available online or at garden centres. We suggest that prior to using any cleaning substances that you check the care instructions for your particular brand of decking.
5. Remove snow and ice from your decking boards
At this time of year, it is likely that your composite decking will get icy or, even on the odd occasion, be covered in snow. It is important to remove snow and ice from your deck to ensure it is a safe space to walk on. If there is only a light sprinkling of snow, one of the easiest ways to clear your deck is with a leaf blower. Never use metal shovels or sharp-edge tools when removing snow or ice from your composite deck.
