Does composite decking get hot in the sun?

The simple answer, is yes, composite decking does get hot in the sun, as do most flooring materials which are outside in direct sunlight.

What makes composite decking get hot?

As mentioned above, the sun will make your composite decking warm. However, there are a few other factors that can affect the warmth of your decking.

Firstly, the colour of your decking. As with all external building products, the darker the colour the hotter it will become and the longer it will retain this heat. In contrast, lighter coloured decking will reflect heat, keeping it cooler. So for example, our black and dark grey composite decking boards will be warmer than our lighter coloured boards, such as light grey or light brown.

Secondly, location. The location of your decking will have an impact on how warm it gets. For example, if it is in direct sunlight then it will warm up much more quickly than if it is in shade. However, if your composite deck is in direct heat, once that heat disappears it will cool down a lot more quickly than alternative decking materials.

By asking yourself this question you will be able to determine how warm your composite decking may get during those hotter summer months.

How to keep composite decking cool

The reasons a composite decking board may contract are identical to those that will make it expand. So all the above points are relevant when it comes to considering elements that will affect the contraction of your new composite decking boards.

As mentioned above, there are a few ways you can keep your composite decking cool. Choosing a lighter colour may be a possibility for some, but if you don’t want to compromise on style, there are alternative methods.

Firstly, try and locate your deck in a shaded area. If this is not possible, consider investing in a large patio umbrella or erecting a pergola to provide shade. A big outdoor rug can also offer a protective layer against warmth on the surface of your decking.
