Reinstating the Sustainable Llyn Maelog SSSI Boardwalk in Anglesey

Llyn Maelog, situated near Rhosneigr on the Isle of Anglesey, is an ecologically sensitive Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) located within the Isle of Anglesey National Landscape. Traversing delicate reed beds along the lake’s edge, the original timber boardwalk provides an essential public right of way for locals and tourists to experience the area’s unique flora and fauna, but it had gradually fallen into disrepair, becoming unsafe and unusable. Funded by the UK government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, the Isle of Anglesey County Council commissioned contractor AE & AT Lewis Ltd to undertake a complete reinstatement of the 332-metre boardwalk.

Upgrading a public pathway through an active SSSI presented complex ecological and structural challenges. The new structure needed to offer exceptional longevity, safety, and rot resistance in a constantly damp wetland setting, while remaining completely eco-friendly to avoid disturbing local wildlife or damaging the surrounding ecosystem. Visually, the replacement deck had to blend seamlessly into the natural landscape to maintain the aesthetic charm of the lake.

To achieve this, Ecodek supplied Heritage woodgrain composite decking alongside Superstiff structural composite decking, both in a rich natural dark brown shade. The wood plastic composite material utilises recycled plastic and wood, eliminating the risk of toxic timber treatments leaching into the sensitive wetland environment. Featuring a generous 1.2-metre width, integrated passing bays, and a spacious viewpoint platform, the new decking structure delivers superior slip resistance, structural rigidity, and rot-proof durability without requiring harsh chemical maintenance.

The completed boardwalk has successfully restored safe public access across the SSSI, ensuring that residents, nature enthusiasts, and visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of Llyn Maelog for generations to come.
