Sustainability in manufacturing is about much more than simply choosing recycled materials. It is about looking carefully at the entire production process, understanding where waste is created and finding practical ways to keep valuable resources in use for as long as possible. At Ecodek, this approach is built into the way we manufacture our composite decking. Rather than viewing production waste as something that needs to be disposed of, we see it as a resource that can be recovered, processed and brought back into the manufacturing cycle. As a result, we do not send any production waste from our manufacturing process to landfill.
During the manufacture of composite decking, some excess material is inevitably created. Boards may need to be cut, trimmed or rejected as part of normal production and quality control processes. At Ecodek, suitable waste material is collected and granulated on site rather than being discarded. This material can then be reintroduced into our manufacturing operation and used again, including within the production of our Evolution decking range. By recovering material in this way, we are able to reduce waste, make better use of the resources already available to us and limit the need for additional virgin raw materials.
Turning Waste Back Into Decking
The idea behind our approach is simple. Materials that still have value should remain in use wherever possible. Instead of following a traditional linear model where raw materials are turned into products and eventually discarded, we aim to create a more circular manufacturing process. Production waste can be recovered, processed and used again, helping us retain valuable material within the manufacturing cycle for longer. This not only reduces the amount of waste generated by our operations, but also supports a more efficient and responsible approach to resource use.
This circular approach becomes even more important when considered alongside the materials already used within Ecodek composite decking. Our boards are manufactured using up to 95% recycled and sustainably sourced raw materials, including sustainably sourced wood fibre and recycled HDPE polymer derived from post-consumer plastic waste such as milk bottles and food packaging. The wood fibre used within our composite products is responsibly sourced, while our products are also designed to be recyclable at the end of their usable life. Together, these measures help us reduce reliance on virgin materials while giving existing resources another useful purpose.
Extending the Circular Approach Beyond Our Factory
Our commitment to reducing waste does not stop when decking leaves our manufacturing facility. Installation projects can sometimes leave customers with unused boards, offcuts or sections of decking that are no longer required. Rather than allowing suitable material to enter the waste stream, Ecodek operates a waste buy-back scheme that enables eligible composite decking to be returned to us for recycling.
Through the scheme, customers can return qualifying Ecodek material, including unused boards, installation offcuts and suitable used decking. Eligible material is credited per kilogram and can then be ground down and brought back into our manufacturing process. This provides customers with a practical and responsible alternative to disposal while helping us recover valuable composite material that can be used again.
The result is a much more circular journey for our products. Material can move from manufacture to installation, then back through recovery and recycling before being used again within future production. This helps extend the useful life of the materials within our decking and ensures that waste reduction is not limited to what happens inside our factory.
A Wider Commitment to Responsible Manufacturing
Zero production waste to landfill forms part of a much broader approach to improving the environmental performance of our manufacturing operation. Since 2017, the production lines for our composite products at our Scunthorpe manufacturing facility have held carbon-negative status following a cradle-to-factory-gate lifecycle assessment carried out by the BioComposites Centre at Bangor University. The assessment considered significant materials, transportation, energy use and packaging associated with production.
As part of the Epwin Group, Ecodek also benefits from a wider focus on energy management and operational efficiency. Epwin Group has achieved ISO 50001 Energy Management certification, which provides a structured and independently audited framework for monitoring energy consumption and identifying opportunities to improve energy performance. Alongside this, Ecodek has continued to make practical changes within its manufacturing operation, including electrifying materials-handling equipment, removing LPG usage from site and upgrading its HGV fleet to Euro 6 engines.
These changes demonstrate that reducing environmental impact is not the result of one single initiative. It requires continual improvement across materials, energy use, transport, manufacturing efficiency and waste management. Our Zero to Landfill approach to production waste is one important part of that wider picture.
Made in Britain, With Greater Control Over Waste
Manufacturing most of our Ecodek products in Britain also gives us greater control over the way our products are made and how materials are managed throughout production. By manufacturing at our own UK facility, we are able to recover production waste directly, monitor our processes closely and continually identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary waste.
UK manufacturing also allows us to maintain close oversight of material quality, production standards and environmental performance. It means that waste can be processed within the same manufacturing environment instead of being treated as an unavoidable by-product of production. This helps us build sustainability into the manufacturing process itself rather than treating it as something that sits separately from day-to-day operations.
For us, Zero to Landfill is not simply about finding another destination for waste. It is about preventing valuable materials from becoming waste in the first place wherever possible. By recovering production material, recycling customer offcuts and manufacturing composite decking using recycled and responsibly sourced raw materials, we can keep resources working harder and for longer.
Closing the Loop
The construction and building products industries have an important role to play in reducing waste and improving the way materials are used. Manufacturers have an opportunity to design products and processes that support a more circular economy, where resources are recovered, reused and recycled rather than discarded after a single use.

Using trusted suppliers gives us full traceability over the materials used in the products we sell – meaning that we are able to recycle these boards at the end of their life, to re-use within our manufacturing process and prevent our products ending up in landfill.
