Composite decking is extremely easy to maintain, especially when compared to traditional timber decking, as it does not require any sanding, sealing, or staining to protect it from the elements. However, cleaning your composite decking comprehensively twice a year and providing general TLC will keep your decking looking better for longer.
Tools required for composite deck cleaning
You do not need any specialist cleaning tools to clean your composite decking. However, there are a few key items will need; a suitable cleaning solution, a brush, a soft mop or soft bristle brush and a hosepipe.
How do you clean composite decking?
Cleaning composite decking is simple and straightforward. We would recommend cleaning your composite decking twice a year and keeping it generally tidy for the remainder of the year. Here is a step-by-step guide to help get you started:
- Remove all furniture and other items from the decked area.
- Sweep the decking to remove all leaves and other debris.
- Clean all debris from gaps between composite decking boards to allow for proper drainage.
- Make up the cleaning solution as directed on the bottle and apply to the surface of the decking using a soft mop, or very soft nylon bristle brush, and gently work into the surface. Allow the solution to sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Go over the surface again with any remaining solution and immediately rinse off thesolution using a garden hosepipe, ensuring all the solution is removed.
- Do not be tempted to use a jet wash. Using a recommended WPC cleaner and a common garden hose is more than enough to clean and restore your Ecodek decking and you may risk damaging the deck surface due to the high pressure some jet wash machines can produce.
- Let the decking fully dry before putting any furniture and other accessories back.
Things to consider when cleaning your composite decking
In addition to the step-by-step guide above, there are a few things to consider when cleaning your composite decking:
- Do not use a harsh bristled brush on your composite decking. It may leave you with scratches and marks on the surface of your decking which cannot be removed.
- Always use a recommended washing solution and always read the manufacturers instructions carefully.
- Do not use bleach on your composite decking, as this may cause marks and stains that are irreversible.
- As mentioned above, do not use a jet wash on your composite decking as this may cause damage to the surface.

Common issues that make composite decking dirty
There are many issues that can cause your composite decking to become dirty. However, there are ways in which to minimise any damage caused and preventative actions you can take.
Mould
If you see dark spots developing on the surface of your deck, it may be a sign of mould or fungus. It is very important to apply an anti-fungal solution to the surface immediately to prevent it spreading any further. Anti-fungal washes are widely available from garden centres and DIY stores, however, do read the manufacturers instructions carefully and keep children and pets away from the area being treated.
Snow and ice
Snow and ice may not cause too much damage to your decking. However, very thick, hard ice could scratch and mark the surface of your decking. It is also a hazard underfoot and it is best to remove it as soon as possible. To do this, simple spread sodium chloride (table salt) over the snow and ice to help it dissolve.
Flowerpots
Flowerpots can create potential problems with staining if they sit directly on the deck. For example, minerals from the soil and any fertilisers can leave a white discolouration. We would recommend using a plant stand to raise the pot off the surface of the deck, which also enables air to flow underneath.
Furniture
All items regularly left on your composite decking, such as furniture, can have an impact in terms of weathering and discolouration. We recommend regularly moving furniture to allow for more evenly distributed weathering – and therefore a more even surface colour.
Please note, when moving furniture try to lift rather than drag your items. This will help prevent damage being done to the surface.
