School children at Big Wood School modern comprehensive in the East Midlands wanted an outdoor area where they could enjoy sitting down and socialising together, the head teacher also felt it was important for the school to have an outdoor focal point within the school grounds, hence it was decided to build an amphitheatre. This social area was completed last year using stone flags to construct the amphitheatre seating, however, this led to unforeseen problems; the stone flags regularly became stained and anyone sitting on them soon felt cold and uncomfortable. As a result, the area failed to be used to its full potential.
During the summer holidays, Big Wood school in Nottingham came up with a novel solution of turning their under-used seating area into a much warmer and more eco-friendly social space using ecodek wood plastic composite decking to re-clad the stone steps. The students have now found that due to the fantastic insulating properties of the composite decking boards, it provides much more comfortable seating and an area that the head teacher can be proud of. The amphitheatre is now complete and apart from looking great and being very low maintenance, it also stays cleaner for longer, dries quicker and is more comfortable to sit on.
