Composite Decking Makes An Appearance On ITV

Was great to see Mr Alan Titchmarsh and David Domoney promoting composite decking on the much loved show “Love your Garden” on ITV yesterday.   The show came to the aid of the Costello family in Norwich, who live in a bungalow with a garden that needed a lot of work and more importantly was designed to be low maintenance.  The key features in the garden included a separate area for the children to play, an area for the family to sit together and a hot tub for the adults to relax in.

During the program David discussed the material options when installing decking, quite rightly he explained softwood although is the cheaper option requires far more maintenance and will eventually rot, hardwood decking is more expensive and again requires maintenance.  Due to the Costello family requirements of a low maintenance garden David went for composite decking as he says it is “effectively no maintenance at all”.  As David explained composite decking is made from recycled plastic, the boards used in the program are a hollow profile with hidden fixings, although we are thrilled composite material is being used more and more we do feel it necessary for people to be aware of the following issues when considering using hollow profiles and hidden fixings.

  1. Hollow boards can hold water & moisture internally and once water has got in, it is very difficult to shift, this constant dampness will accelerate the rate of decomposition of the board over an equivalent solid board that Ecodek® supply.
  2. Hollow boards are not nearly as resistant to impact damage due to their reduced wall thickness and can you imagine the work involved in replacing a hollow deck board that has become damaged? Even more so when using hidden clips?!
  3. Hidden clip fixings do not fix the decking boards down sufficiently compared to screws allowing the boards to move far too easily on the sub frame.
  4. Hollow boards require the use of end caps to cover their unsightly exposed ends; these caps do not have the same raw material characteristics as the decking so will weather differently to the boards themselves.

So imagine a profile that has none of the above issues comes from a sustainable source , is low maintenance and low potential for slip?Ecodek is the answer.
